FAITH AND WORK

BRINGING PEOPLE AND GOD TOGETHER IN THEIR WORK

Most believers spend much of their time working, whether at a job, starting a company, raising a family or as a student. At One Family, we want to equip you to share Christ's love, truth, grace, and justice through your work. This page provides resources to help you rediscover your work as an act of worship and a true calling full of meaning and purpose.

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:32

THE GOSPEL CHANGES EVERYTHING ABOUT YOUR WORK.

  • God uses our work to reveal what is in our hearts and to invite us into a deeper relationship with Him. Work is a key mechanism God uses for spiritual growth.

  • Work is a primary opportunity to love our neighbors. People take note of how we act at work.  Our faith in Christ is on display when we interact with our customers, our colleagues, our clients and even our competitors.

  • We are called to look for ways to renew our industries and communities through work. We should consider how God might be using advances in technologies, innovation and systems to reveal His glory and restore his creation.

DOES MY WORK MATTER?

The scripture teaches us that:
  1. Work is good.
The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. GENESIS 2:15 NIV

  2. How you work is more important than where you work.
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. COLOSSIANS 3:23 NIV

  3. The way you work is a reflection of the one you worship.
You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
    MATTHEW 5:14-16 ESV

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR WINNING AT WORK

  1. Show up early. (it communicates that you care and that you’re reliable)

  2. Offer solutions, not complaints. (even if your proposed solution won’t work, you’re effort will be appreciated)

  3. Make your supervisor’s job easier, not harder. (you’ve been hired to take work off of someone’s plate - if you’re making work harder for your supervisor, they’re going to want to hire someone else)

  4. Take your drama to your mama.

  5. Be grateful. (work is a sacred responsibility, and a blessing)

  6. Always seek to improve.

  7. Be coachable.

  8. Own your mistakes.

  9. Respect your supervisors, peers, and subordinates.

  10. Go all in.

“If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as a Michaelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, 'Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.”

― Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
